Perfectionism…lets get real!
As an entrepreneur you may find yourself striving for perfection…after all…”you work is a direct reflection of who you are” …right?
However, at some point you may need a wake-up call…as hard as it is to hear.
In many different settings, I’ve listened to women entrepreneurs describe traits that seem to hold them back…such as… “shiny object syndrome” or “I’m just too creative” or “I have so many good ideas I can’t decide” etc.
When in reality (here comes the wake-up call), those statements are just…old worn out excuses.
Excuses…because you’re afraid to make a decision…why?…because you’re afraid of failure and/or success.
Try this on for a paradigm shift…these excuses are the very character traits that define an entrepreneur!
Yes, that’s right…perfectionism is just one of several entrepreneurial traits.
First of all, lets get something straight…the problem is not in the trait…the problem comes from not managing your behaviors around perfectionism. This is an important point because perfectionism not managed properly…can literally paralyze you! Have you ever heard the saying “analysis paralysis?”
I told you this may be hard to hear…but for those of you still reading…lets explore this a little more.
Next time you have a project to complete…like choosing a niche topic for your new online business, writing a blog posting, creating a sales copy for your new product launch…notice where you get stuck. I’ll bet it’s in the decision making process…right?
By being stuck… what you are really doing is making a chioce…that’s right…a choice to stay where you are currently…rather than being authentic and bringing your gifts forward.
when you think something is not “perfect” enough…you have to ask yourself…what the heck does perfect mean anyway? …And perfect for whom? Listen, there are people out there waiting…wanting…needing…and begging for your help…Yes!…they want “your” unique style of delivery of the message you have chosen.
Look, do you remember a time when you were struggling to learn something…maybe in school…or in your business? You tried everything but nothing worked…until you found someone special that “spoke your language.” You resonated with that person’s unique style…
Let me ask you this…were you attracted to them because they were so organized?…Did they ever have an off day…or experience a blip in their presentation or use of technology? I’ll bet you can’t even remember…you know why?…Because it’s NOT important…in other words…who cares!
My hunch is you were there for the message…you resonated with there unique style…right?
Can you imagine if that person was unable to manage their perfectionism (yes…they had this trait too you know)!
Let me share some thing with you…
I have this coach that I resonate with…i especially love her down to earth unique style. However, it seems that most times I am on her gold calls there is some kind of malfunction of some sort. For instance, she may get disconnected from the call temporarily…or her computer drops the internet connection in the middle of a presentation…or there is a problem with her autoresponder or her webinar…
What’s the Point
The point is I highly value her calls…because they are packed with awesome references, information, ideas, special announcements, and nuggets of all kinds.
Now seriously, can you imagine if she refused to do another gold call until her system was perfect!…Oh My Dear! I know I would be devastated…
See, I don’t show up on her calls expecting perfection…right? I do however expect a ton of info (which she ALWAYS delivers).
What Does This Have To Do With Me…
You too have a great message…
I would imagine you want to share your message…and you want to help others…right?
Well, guess what!
Your audience is waiting for you…and they are not looking for perfection in you! They just want you to share your message.
So, if you’re feeling the paralysis of perfectionism here are some simple steps you can take to manage perfectionism…
1) Keep it real…notice that you are over analyzing…and own it!
2) Buddy up with someone and hold each other accountable.
3) Set deadlines for your projects and stick to them …ready or not!
4) Take one baby step a day to to move you forward,
Hey, remember Newton’s first law…something at rest tends to stay at rest…and something in motion tends to stay in motion!
In an online business, because things change so fast, you will always be tweaking your content…so, if you think about it…really…the concept of “perfect” does not exist…
Also, as you grow and change…so will your material….however you look at it…your material is always going to be a work in progress.
Hows that for a paradigm shift?
So now…take a deep breath in…and as you blow it out…let all the tension along with the idea that things have to be perfect before you can move forward…be released…Whew!
